On their way to a basketball game, Elaine asks her husband to stop briefly at an art gallery for an exhibition opening. She lingers over a seemingly simple blue painting while Larry presses her to hurry along so they won’t miss their social commitments. Their exchange is quick and funny, revealing patterns formed over the course of their marriage. When the artist steps forward and is revealed to have a personal history with Elaine, the mood shifts. Now a well‑known painter, Peter Carsten reminds her of an earlier intimacy tied to Blue Sky with Approaching Storm and of what she set aside in choosing a life of financial ease. Like a clear blue sky, what appears calm does not always signal what is coming.
