90 minute
4 women, 1 either
When four college friends, now in their sixties, discover that one of them has been “gifted” with an abandoned baby, they try to figure out what’s next: for the mother, for the baby, and for the four of them. Through their research, the ladies discover that the child could be adopted, but that adoption agencies are more likely to grant adoption to married couples. If the solution is marriage, how can they pull this off?
Women of a Certain Age has been produced in Illinois, was a Semifinalist for the National Playwright’s Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Center, and a Finalist in the Waterworks Festival
What they say:
“Women of a Certain Age” is the result of Duprey’s observation and imagination, and it’s a hoot. Really. The four women interact with the bluntness and honesty that happens between really good friends. There are some gloriously funny moments in this play, like when they try to get a cell phone connection in the cabin’s remote location.
The script is literate, funny, and fun! A comedy with a fair share of shenanigans, that is also touching and deals with contemporary issues.
About the Playwright:
Steve Duprey has been directing theatre for over 45 years. In 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic was taking hold, he realized he wanted to be a playwright. After 45 years of directing, he knew what good dialogue looked like…and a good scene…and a powerful arc. He also knew that he wanted to bring his audience from laughter to tears and then back again. After having dinner with several “women of a certain age,” he decided to take a swing at writing roles for older women. His wife and friends became central to his research, feeding the moods, attitudes, and feelings surrounding the four principal characters in the play.
