Marv Siegel
80 minute comedy
4 men, 3 women, 1 either
Edna planned to retire in peace, but her husband Norman refuses to accept aging quietly, filling his days with résumés, half‑baked business schemes, and relentless ambition. His latest ideas include turning mismatched socks into a business and launching a high‑stakes lawsuit over a recalled exercise machine. When Rosemary, a new
neighbor and one of Norman’s old flames, moves in next door, Edna’s calm retirement dissolves into jealousy and unease. Matters grow even more tangled when their daughter Marcie falls for Rosemary’s son Raymond, who just happens to be on the opposite side of the lawsuit. As plans unravel and loyalties collide, the Benders must face what growing older really means, and why pretending to be young can cost more than admitting you’re not. Like Jack Benny himself, Norman is simply not 39 anymore.
Jack Benny’s Not 39 Any More was submitted for Pulitzer Prize consideration after its production debut at the Theatre Conspiracy in Ft. Myers, Florida . Productions have been staged across the US in community theatres as well as retirement communities.
What they’re saying:
- “…hilarious and heartwarming. . .” Island Reporter
- “…an entertaining production, thanks to Siegel’s funny, frothy script…” Naples Daily News.
- “…a total hit with our audiences. They laughed so much and were touched in many ways. I was lucky to have a wonderful cast who enjoyed it as much as I did. I have either acted in or directed over 30 plays and this is the first one that my wife sat through 3 times–that says something! Thanks for writing such a super play! The first week, the show had sold attendance; the second week it was sold out!…” John D., North Carolina
