Eric Weil
15 minutes
2 men, 2 women
Just when Linda shares with her husband Tom if they could jazz things up a bit, Tom gets a letter from an ex-girlfriend from college. As the two read the letter, he is startled when the old flame reminds him of a promise he made when they broke up. Specifically, she holds him to his pledge that if her husband “ever hurt her, Tom would come and take care of him.” And then, Tom and Linda are discussing whether or not he really could or should drive to Ohio to uphold his word to go toe-to-toe with an ex-cop, the doorbell rings and out of the blue, the ex-girlfriend barges in. Buckle up because, with another knock on the door, the action (and plot twists) are just beginning!
From the Playwright:
My college girlfriend and I, after graduating from college and getting jobs in different states, tried to maintain a long-distance relationship. This was long before email and cell phones, so the USPS was our main line of communication, with the occasional phone call (after 9 PM). One night, I called her to discover she had found a new boyfriend. Other than this final “Dear Eric” call, everything in the play that occurs after the breakup is the product of my imagination. I definitely did promise to “take care” of the new boyfriend should he not treat her well.
About the playwright:
Eric Weil is a retired English professor living who started writing plays on a whim. Theatre companies in seven states as well as North Carolina have staged his plays, mostly 10-minute comedies. As an actor, Eric has trod the boards exactly twice: as an unnamed prisoner in a college production of Man of La Mancha, and 30 years later as Egeus in Midsummer Night’s Dream, another college production. Eric is the father of two and the grandfather of two.
