80 minute comedy
4 men, 3 women, 1 either
Edna’s plan was to retire in peace, but the reality is that her husband Norman just can’t sit still. He’s sending out resumes, proposing business plans, and chasing after every make-it-rich business scheme that comes along. His newest Big Idea is to be the John Wilkes Rockefeller of irregular socks. And just when he and his business partner are about to figure out the details, a new neighbor, Rosemary arrives on the scene, and things just get crazier. First, Rosemary has information that inspires his next method for making a buck — suing the Rockhard Rower Company. Second, Rosemary is an old flame of Norman’s, sending Edna into fits of jealousy. And finally, to add to the hilarity, Rosemary’s son Raymond is not only an ideal match for their daughter Marcie, the two young love birds are on opposite sides of the Rockhard Rower dispute. A settlement to any of these issues seems impossible. The reality is, just like Jack Benny, Norman’s not 39 anymore.
Jack Benny’s Not 39 Any More was submitted for Pulitzer Prize consideration after its production debut at the Theatre Conspiracy in Ft. Myers, Florida . The show has been called:
- “…hilarious and heartwarming. . .” Island Reporter
- “…an entertaining production, thanks to Siegel’s funny, frothy script…” Naples Daily News.
- “…a total hit with our audiences. They laughed so much and were touched in many ways. I was lucky to have a wonderful cast who enjoyed it as much as I did. I have either acted in or directed over 30 plays and this is the first one that my wife sat through 3 times–that says something! Thanks for writing such a super play! The first week, the show had sold attendance; the second week it was sold out!…” John D., North Carolina
Productions and staged readings of Jack Benny’s Not 39 Any More include the venerable 13th Street Repertory Theatre in New York City, The Theater Project, The Villager’s Theatre, The Reader’s Theatre, the Union Club, and the Stonebridge Community Players.
