Bonnie's Column:
Jump Start Your Senior Theatre

We hope that the pandemic may be fading enough to let us resume what we love to do—perform. Even though we are eager, last year has changed a lot of things. Many of us are exhausted, more irritable, and less thoughtful of others. A mindful re-opening addresses safety concerns, play selection, how to deal with 'prickly' actors, and includes a back-up plan for 'just in case.' In other words, before you resume regular activities, do some solid planning. It will pay off. To help you, we have a survey, a sale, and a discussion.

  • Survey:  Share with us your plans for post-pandemic theatrical activities. Our survey will take only a few minutes! Click here for Jump Start Your Senior Theatre: What are your plans?
  • Sale: Find new and fresh materials for your ‘coming out’ classes and performances. All of our plays, books, and materials are on sale!
  • Discussion: Get strategic! And join our “Jump Start Conversation” for ideas about how to emerge and return to work.

No one is unchanged from the pandemic. If we are able to address the situation with direction and purpose, both actors and audiences will heal faster and better. We are here to help you!

Yours in theatre,

Arches, Balance and Light

Arches, Balance and Light by Mary Spletter is the story of famed architect Julia Morgan. The Berkeley native was the first woman to be admitted, after much struggle, to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the first female architect certified in California, and the first female architect to win the AIA Gold Medal. She is best known for designing San Simeon and many other famous buildings.

NewStages Theatre Company

Mark Salyer is our newest member to be selected for Who's Who in Senior Theatre. He is the Director and lead instructor of NewStages, a Los Angeles-based theatre company for seniors producing classes, workshops, and performances. Mark draws on his background in all disciplines of the performing arts to bring dynamic arts experiences to the senior community. The company has produced 15 performances and over 30 workshops including musical theatre with the fabulous Kay Cole plus others on acting, improvisation, storytelling, and singing.

The company has done a lot of work using memories to create theatre in their LGBTQ seniors program. "These folks have such amazing stories. We felt a need to nurture them in the process," says Salyer. They also have produced online classes and performances. "I was concerned that the technological demands would lessen our reach and that many people would feel uncomfortable on Zoom. Boy, was I wrong!" Salyer explains.

Currently, NewStages is offering a Tennessee Williams workshop and preparing for auditions for their Pride show, Secret Lives. Click here to learn about Mark and the company.
