The cast of Laughter is
Ageless
|
It seems that
for me, there's always another lesson to learn, or to re-learn.
I was
directing a performance at a retirement community with actors who I
have worked with for many years. We were performing Laughter
is Ageless, a series of short plays and monologues.
We had included many jokes as segues between shows. But,
during the last dress rehearsal we realized that the performance, which
was only two days away, was too complicated. After a very scary a-ha
moment, we held an extra rehearsal to remove the jokes that were
complicating the show.
The next day, our two performances were met with full
houses, wild applause, and success! The message I had to re-learn was
the power of how when you make things easier, you make them better.

Summer is a great time for fundraising. With a slower
production schedule, it's a chance to write grant proposals, plan
special events, and review financial plans. Most Senior Theatres have
several income streams--from class fees, grants, performance fees,
special events, and other forms. Learn more in our recently updated
TipSheet, Fundraising for Senior Theatre.

Funding
Senior Theatre: The 22 Immutable Laws...
|
We discovered a great article about fundraising by H.R.
Moody, a respected colleague in the aging field. You'll find The 22 Immutable Laws of Fundraising useful and inspiring:
1. All
fundraising is marketing. Don't think of marketing as
something distasteful. On the contrary, Peter Drucker defined marketing
as "solving other people's problems." What problem is your
organization trying to solve? What problem does your donor want you to
solve?
2. Nonprofits
are brands. Like Habitat for Humanity or the Red Cross,
having a brand means not needing to explain who you are. It gives
immediate credibility when raising money.
3. No one ever
gives away money for nothing. Raising money is what
business people call a "value proposition. What does the donor
get for their money? It could be publicity, or a positive feeling for
doing something good. Whatever it is, discover why your donors give
money.
4. You don't get
money unless you ask for it. Though it sounds simple,
nonprofits often fail to do the one thing that gets money.
"Ask." It may not necessarily happen right away, but if you
don't ask, you wont receive.

Group of the Month: The OLLI
Players
|

|
The OLLI Players
|
The OLLI Players is sponsored
by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University.
The company of 18 thespians range from early 60's to late 80's. Some
have not performed since high school and now have fallen in love with
theatre. Their goal is to have fun by entertaining others.
The group performs stories of their lives from childhood to the
present, lyrics from the heart, and short plays which are combined with
improvisation. They entertain in care homes, retirement communities, as
well as rehab facilities.
Their audiences energize the company and make the actors feel
fulfilled. They will travel to audiences of one person or fifty people.
Whatever the situation they love to perform and the audiences love what
they do!
