Bonnie's column: It's about the boat
The Boys in the Boat--not unlike actors on a stage
The Boys in the Boat--not unlike actors on a stage

Good thoughts have much to do with good rowing. It isn't enough for the muscles of a crew to work in unison; their hearts and minds must also be as one. George Yeoman Pocock

I just finished reading The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, a story about the 8-oar crew team from the University of Washington which represented the United States in the 1936 Olympics. What a book!

The author often quotes rowing expert, George Yeoman Pocock, about the teamwork necessary for a winning rowing team. It made me think about Senior Theatre. He talks about how members need to trust each other, work together, follow their leader's calls for pacing, and more. When it all works, there's a "swing" that happens, a magic that he says, "they'll never forget as long as they live."

So is it with a play. When it's working, the play takes on a life of its own, the actors moving it along to inspire and delight audiences. The "swing," that feeling of exhilaration, is what keeps us coming back for more. We can't wait for the next show so we can feel it again. But it's not about the individual, it's about what the group is able to do together. It's about the boat!

Happy Holidays!
