Bonnie's column: Joan Rivers, an older woman with a voice
The New York Times called Joan Rivers, "Unforgettable!"
The New York Times called Joan Rivers, "Unforgettable!"

The tributes to this amazing woman have been many, with mine amongst them. There was something about Joan Rivers that made so many of us feel like she was one of the family. She said what others only think. She had a voice.

Perhaps I valued her so much because she was like a lot of us in Senior Theatre. In fact, my life's work has been dedicated to giving a voice to older people. Of course, with so many older women in Senior Theatre, whenever I direct or publish a play, older women are on the top of my mind. What roles would they like to play? What do they need to say? That's why we feature so many shows with plenty of good, juicy, humorous roles for women.

Joan was able to say things that were politically incorrect. I find that too often in Senior Theatre, we tend toward the tame rather than toward the brave. Instead of taking the safe, easy way out, we should push the boundaries more. Seniors have important things to say on stage, wisdom to pass on. Use Senior Theatre as the vehicle for your voice.

We thank Joan and hope that her spirit will help you bring more courageous and challenging material to your audiences, always with a generous helping of humor!

Yours in theatre,

Playreading Conference Calls begin again

The Playreading Conference Calls get more popular every month! They are a fun way to learn about useful shows. When asked why the readers enjoy the sessions, they talked about the group camraderie and:

  • "Hearing the show is important."
  • "It's great to discuss the show after we read it. I love hearing the other reader's comments and reactions to the show."
  • "I love the Playreading Conference Call. It's fun and clever."

Join us for a live reading of two comedies on this month's theme, 'Reinvent Yourself' with Still Twenty-Nine and The Stick-up followed by a discussion of the shows. The playwrights may be present to hear your comments and answer your questions.

Great shows for the Fall, Halloween, and the holidays
Mrs. Claus Gets Menopause
Mrs. Claus Gets Menopause

It's not too late to stage a show for Halloween. Try one of these or put together several on a theme:

New! Angel in Disguise (or how to get your husband to wear a costume)-What's a woman to do if she can’t get her husband to dress up like an angel for a costume party? The answer will have the audience laughing hilariously throughout this play!

New! Get Your Flu Shot! When you need to convince people to get the flu shot, sometimes entertainment works the best and is the most convincing. This popular show has been used extensively by health departments, aging organizations, and others with great success!

Everything Blows Away- A short play between a couple and a bunch of leaves. Lovely!

Witch One- Life is always about the unintended consequences, even if you are a witch! A funny, short play that’s easy to stage.

A Profusion of Roses- With two strong women’s roles this show introduces you to a mother, daughter, and an absent “sister” in a twisty, mysterious relationship. A suspenseful, wonderful play!

Skits for Seniors: Holiday Plays-

  • Halloween Costumes- It's the day before Halloween and four friends at the Rockcliff Residence are full of surprises.
  • Superstitions- Outrageous characters discuss superstitions in this aptly named show.

A Wasted Gift- Through James, a lonely, bitter man, we learn how to reflect on our own lives and make the right decisions. But is it too late for James? This play is a story about doing the right thing.

In addition, check out our many holiday shows!
