It’s always a good day when The Sun magazine arrives in my mailbox. I look forward to the interview that sets the theme. Then, I can’t wait to read the personal stories, essays, poetry, and explore the great black and white photos. There’s not a speck of advertising, just insight.
This month John Malkin focuses on “the story we’re born with” and a strong message for everyone in Senior Theatre. He says, “There’s an African proverb: ‘When death finds you, may it find you alive.’ Alive means living your own life, not the life that your parents wanted, or the life some cultural group or political party wanted, but the life that your own soul wants.”
Malkin encourages older people to become “elders” by stepping out of fear to live a more creative life. Leaving a legacy of wisdom is more important than leaving money.
The great thing about The Sun magazine is that it touches you where you are at. An article that speaks to you today might not have moved you at a different time and place.

This is a great time to remember Senior Theatre lovers! Whether you need a gift for a performer, director, or friend, we have something for everyone. Use our Best Seller List to select plays and books that might work. Then, when you can’t think of anything else, simply send a gift certificate. They come in all denominations and can be used for anything in our collection.

Our tip of the month comes from Young@Heart, the choral group where seniors sing rock songs. When the company needed to raise funds to create a new CD, they turned to Kickstarter. It’s billed as the “World’s largest funding platform for creative projects.” Within a few weeks, Young@Heart’s 579 backers pitched in $26,063! Now, the group will be able to produce a double album to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
KickStarter campaigns are not without work. You need to create a viable project, let supporters know how you will use their money, and highlight the many positive aspects of your work. Once the effort is up and running, solicit your backers and let them know about the project. Plan to send several reminders to update patrons about the campaign’s status and to encourage them to donate now.

Last month’s column about Carolyn Roshak hit home for her. As you may remember, Carolyn is the Senior Theatre director who has developed a playreading group in her retirement community. One of our readers was so moved that he made a donation to the program. It will give Carolyn the funds she needs to keep the program vibrant. We are thrilled that our reader was so thoughtful. We’re pleased that such good things came from Carolyn’s story.
