Since 1980 seniors have been kicking up their heels and raising their voices in song in the Senior Star Showcase at the Community College of Baltimore County. The Showcase was awarded a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The grant was used to support the seniors' new production, an original country music show Jubilation Springs.
What started as a 16-member choir has grown to over 55 members with an average age of 73. The group has performed in Las Vegas for the Senior Theatre USA Performance Festival and also New York, Washington, D.C. and many local colleges. The group has two major productions at CCBC each year plus they tour to performances at civic organizations, churches, synagogues, nursing homes, senior centers, and retirement communities.
Scott Black, CCBC's Dean of the School of the Liberal Arts, said, “I have seen the Senior Star Showcase develop into one of the nation's premier older adult performing groups," said Black. "The recognition from the NEA continues the national recognition of the group's excellence."
The group presents Oklahoma with Music by Richard Rodgers Book & Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein on:
May 14 at 7:30 pm, May 15, 16 at 2 pm, May 19 at 1 pm at the CCBC Essex, Building B, Theatre.
