“Young at Heart” Documentary Proves Senior Performers Rock
The documentary film “Young at Heart,” which is based on a senior chorus which performs rock music, is being released nationwide this month to rave reviews. It was a hit at Sundance, on The Today Show and ABC News. Newsweek said it was “A gem I can happily recommend.” USA Today gave it “3 ½ out of 4 stars.” The Daily News proclaimed the movie is “sweet, funny and heartbreaking…one of the most delightful movies to come along this year.”
Young at Heart is only one of the many performing companies with seniors (55+). They represent a grass roots movement called “Senior Theatre.”
According to Bonnie Vorenberg, (www.seniortheatre.com) “Senior Theatre is one of the fastest growing forms of the performing arts, with companies filled with older amateur to professional actors starring in shows in small to large communities.” There now are over 770 Senior Theatre companies in the US and many groups in Canada and around the world. Many of the groups appear on stages in arts or senior centers, though others are in touring companies like Young at Heart, the group featured in the film. Groups often perform short plays, musical revues, full length productions, or they create their own shows based on memories or history.
Studies prove that older performers gain physical, mental and social benefits from performing. Older adults use the theatre as their outlet, their art form, a way to have a voice and be heard. It’s a way for them to use their art to comment on society, on their lives, and on the future.
Senior Theatre is a very active movement. There are festivals, educational meetings, new books and many new plays for older performers. In addition, the National Endowment for the Arts recently announced a new Creativity and Aging grant.
