Bonnie's Column: HELP! Tell us what plays work for you

I always say that when you find a strong script, your work is half done. So, that's what we've been doing this summer--reading plays, listening to CD's, and getting excited about our new, upcoming Fall catalog. Even though, we are reviewing all kinds of genres, we are especially searching for short comedies with several characters.

We need your help. Please send us a list of your 10 favorite Senior Theatre shows. What's been a hit for you? What's been the show that works when nothing else will? When we receive your list, we'll deduct $5 from your next mail or phone order. And you'll be helping many other Senior Theatre lovers.

If you're a playwright, send us your work.

...and, as always, thanks!

It's easy to have fun with Reunited!
It's easy to have fun with Reunited!

So many of you requested a perusal of the new play, Reunited, that we had to print more! So far, the responses have been very positive. People are loving the script. It has:

  • Full Length Comedy
  • Eight Characters (all over 55)
  • Six Women, Two Men
  • One Set - a living/dining area
  • Contemporary Costumes

After 47 years, four sorority sisters re-unite for their every-decade get-together for a week of fun and frolic. Though they planned to spend time sunbathing, swimming, and playing lots of bridge games, the gathering doesn't go as they wanted. Love interferes, addictions arise, a long lost friend re-appears, and a deceased room-mate communicates from the "Other Side." After the conflict and the comedy, friendship prevails.

The show is a rollicking comedy with just enough pathos to make a fun, yet memorable, evening of theatre. The characters are clear and believable, the plot is eventful and the writing is smooth and strong. It's a story about how friendships help older adults both survive and reach their dreams.

"Reunited" keeps the audience in stitches--a director's dream. Lynn Rouyer, Director Pinewood Players, AZ

In the Restroom at Rosenbloom'
In the Restroom at Rosenbloom's

Ludmilla Bollow is the author of In the Restroom at Rosenbloom's and Bitsy and Her Friends, popular scripts in the ArtAge collection. So, it was great to hear that Restroom will be presented by The Riverside Inn Dinner Theatre at Cambridge Springs PA for 24 productions from June 5 through November 7! In addition, The Boise Little Theatre will perform the play for 11 performances in February and March 2008.

George Kalbouss in Columbus OH quit teaching so that he could perform his shows. He performed ten times in July and will present The Great One-Man Russian-American Song and Maybe Dance Show in the spring of 2008. The audiences will be filled with seniors from the various retirement communities where he is a regular performer.

The Older Women's Network Theatre Group in Western Australia is still going strong according to Ruth Kershaw, the Manager of the company. Now, they have even more shows under their belt. There are 20 people in the group, all older women. She says, "We continue to enjoy the work and the fun we have together."

The Best of the Golden Years was presented at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts in July. Local seniors presented the musical revue that featured song, dance, comedy and magic.

The Northern Stars Theater group recently performed an evening of comedy. The show featured a skit, The Salesman, about two conniving ladies turning the tables on a car salesman and a comedian who warmed up the crowd with jokes and stories. The show also included improvisational games that involved the audience. It was a hit!
