Bonnie's Column: Using instinct to create our new catalog

Our new catalog is coming to your mailbox soon!

Our new catalog is coming to your mailbox soon!

In January, we began our play review season. It's the time when we read and evaluate all the plays that have been submitted for possible inclusion in our catalog.

What a delightful group of scripts we received, a total of 160 plays! There were scripts of all lengths and genres written by both amateur and professional playwrights.

How to decide what to choose for the catalog? Of course, we have our basic considerations like number of older female characters, plots that amuse, and action that you can see happening on stage. Beyond that, we use our instinct. In fact, when I talk with directors, they use this sense to help them select plays for their season.

In our busy world, we often downplay the value of instinct. But I think of my first directing teacher who frequently told the class to, "Use your gut." I've found that when I rely on my 'gut,' my decisions come easier and are better.

Our collection is now larger, with over 140 Senior Theatre plays, books, and materials, and has more breadth and depth. There is something for everyone.

Enjoy the catalog. Then, let us know if our instinct helped us bring you just what you were looking for!

Our booth at AACTFest

Our booth at AACTFest

AACTFest, presented by the Washington State Community Theatre Association, met in Tacoma last week. The event brought over 600 community theatre enthusiasts, advocates, and performers together to celebrate the power of theatre.

Senior Citizen's Theatre Troupe of Lifelong performed at the Tompkins County Public Library on June 11. This is the sixth season for the group that performs stories from their lives. Using improvisation, the group develops vignettes and plays, and still with an element of improvisation, they perform the stories. The players were the characters, the scenery, and the props. The troupe has performed for large and small audiences at senior centers, nursing homes, and other nonprofit agencies. Click here to learn more about how to create theatre from memories.

Buddy Powell's Commercial Acting for Older Adults class begins on July 6 in Los Angeles. Many of his students are finding success. In the last month alone, class members were cast in Entourage, General Hospital and in a Lenny Kravitz video. Click here for more details.

Play of the Month: A Bag Full of Miracles

A Bag Full of Miracles

A Bag Full of Miracles

The Young at Heart Players at The Tacoma Musical Playhouse presented A Bag Full of Miracles on June 12-14. It was a huge hit! At the recent AACTFest in Tacoma, I met one of the actors, Judith McKay. She told me:

The experience of acting in "A Bag Full of Miracles" will be with me for years to come as something very positive. I hope to continue to act and entertain, thanks to this heartwarming and most rewarding of experiences.

The plot centers on Maggie Hill, an unmarried, newly retired school teacher with a meager pension, and Lady Anne Windesmeer, a recent widow who has been swindled out of most of her funds by an unscrupulous lawyer. Brought together by their common financial starts, the two seniors convert Lady Anne's home into a bed and breakfast, which becomes the setting for a cast of characters that bring with them hilarity, intrigue, romance, warmth, and a twisting chain of events that will shake up the audience in more ways than one.

The musical has been performed all around the US and in Canada. Add it to your performance schedule! Contact us for a FREE perusal.

Group of the Month: The Vagabond Players

The Vagabond Players focus on high production values, even with their costumes

The Vagabond Players focus on high production values, even with their costumes

Two thousand and nine is turning out to be a memorable year for The Vagabond Players, and not just because it's the troupe's fifth anniversary year.

In January, The Vagabond Players was chosen as the resident theatre company of El Campanil Theatre in Antioch, 50 miles east of San Francisco. The five plays that director and founder Sharon Redman stages each year will appear four or five times in the recently restored 700-seat theater. Busloads of Northern California senior center members will attend mid-week matinees there.

Then, the company received a $20,000 grant from the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation followed by a matching grant of $10,000 from the Thomas J. Long Foundation.

On June 12, The group presented The Sound of Music using the talents of the El Campanil's Children's Theatre.

The Vagabond Players has presented over 225 performances. The company tours extensively and has developed a fine reputation for high quality shows. Check them out!
